Police Constable Kevin Ng Ka-ki of the Narcotics Bureau has been playing ice hockey for more than 16 years. At the recently concluded 6th Winter Asian Game held in Chang Chun, he had the honour of being the vice-captain of the Hong Kong Team which was taking part at the Game for the first time. PC Ng has been an ice hockey enthusiast since he first laced his skates. He loves its fast pace and physical demanding playing style. "My size is relatively small for this sport but I use my skating speed and agility to make up for the difference with players of bigger sizes," he noted. PC Ng regards participation in the Winter Asian Game as a good experience for the Hong Kong Ice Hockey Team as a whole, as well as for its individual players. "The team is made up of amateur players and we still have a lot to learn. However, it was a really good test for us because it allowed us to play with national teams filled with professional players." To prepare for the Game, PC Ng and his 24 teammates began practising once a week last September in order to adapt to a bigger ice rink. They also attended a weeklong intensive training camp in Quanming during Christmas time. Hong Kong's only ice rink is located in Dragon Centre, Sham Shui Po, which can be used for competitive ice hockey games. A new ice rink of an international standard size is expected to open sometime this year, providing the some 400 active ice hockey players in Hong Kong with a better training and practice facility. The next competition PC Ng will play is the Guangzhou, Macao & HKSAR Delta Ice Hockey League. The Hong Kong Ice Hockey Team recorded one win and one loss at the Guangzhou stop of the League last January. For the Hong Kong stop, he is looking forward to a better performance by the team, which will have the advantage of being the home team. "We have been practising and playing for more than four months. It was not only the time in Chang Chun that gave me an unforgettable memory, but also the camaraderie with the teammates I played with. They are the persons I trust and rely on in taking on stronger teams," said PC Ng.
