March 21 marked an important day for the Liaison Bureau (LB) as Assistant Commissioner (Crime) Wong Fook-chuen officiated at the opening of their new office at Arsenal House, Police Headquarters.

Among the large gathering of guests were the Deputy Director-General of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government's Liaison Office in Hong Kong, Mr Zhang Rongsheng, his colleagues from the liaison department, Resident Liaison Officers from foreign law enforcement agencies as well as heads and deputies of Crime Wing.

During a tour of LB's new office, liaison officers from Australia, Canada, France, Japan, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States learned that the open-plan design concept was adopted to enhance internal communication amongst staff, utilise natural sunlight to improve illumination and provide a better sea view. And every office desk has been ergonomically designed to meet occupational safety and health requirements. All these features would make for higher efficiency.

The visitors were impressed by the design and facilities of the conference room, such as fax machine, computer and telephone. If necessary, the conference room can turn into a command post for LB operations or a temporary office for visiting law enforcement officers.

In line with the Three-Year Strategic Action Plan 2005-2008 and the CP Operational Priorities 2007, Liaison Bureau's mission is to foster close co-operation with the Mainland and Macao authorities as well as Interpol members in crime investigation and general police matters.

The opening of the new office provides an opportunity for strengthening the ties and communication with the Mainland and overseas law enforcement officers. The road of crime fighting is rugged and full of challenges. Maintaining effective co-operation with the Mainland and overseas law enforcement agencies is, therefore, vital to the fight against crime. May LB keep up its good work and make further progress!
