Following a recent change to the chairmanship and membership of the Standing Committee on Disciplined Services Salaries and Conditions of Service (SCDS), the new chairman and two new members visited the Force on March 23 to learn at first hand the work and challenges of the Force as well as the current issues of concern to staff. The new chairman, Mr Henry Fan, and two new members, Mr Michael Lee and Mr Robert Cutler, accompanied by three current members, Ms Wong Mee-chun, Mr Eddie Ng and Miss Elaine Chan, first met Commissioner Tang King-shing and Senior Directorate Group Members. Following a brief exchange of views on general Force issues and staff concerns with the Senior Force Management, the SCDS members toured the Emergency Unit Hong Kong Island (EU HKI), where they were briefed on the general roles, functions and challenges of the Unit by Senior Superintendent (Operations) HKI Jacob Cheung Tak-keung and Superintendent EU HKI Chris Tang. After this, the visitors met EU HKI officers and took a look at the equipment and kits regularly carried and used by EU officers. Before concluding their orientation visit, the SCDS members had a frank dialogue with representatives of the four Police Staff Associations about their concerns on pay and matters related to conditions of service. In a letter to CP after the visit, Mr Fan said he and his members were glad to have the opportunity to meet the Senior Force Management and Staff Association representatives to listen to their concerns. He added that SCDS members were very impressed by the professionalism, dedication and constant drive for improvement Force members displayed in maintaining Hong Kong as a safe and stable society.
