Headed by its Chairman, Assistant Commissioner (Crime) Wong Fook-chuen, the Police Swimming Club participated in a "charity swimathon" on October 14. Amongst the 1,200 participants, the club members not only secured the championship but also set a new Guinness record with disabled swimmers.
The relay between those with and without visual impairment was the highlight of the event known as "Kingdom Swimathon 2007". The organiser hoped that this event would arouse public awareness of the needs and abilities of the blind and visually impaired, and at the same time raise fund for supporting the blindness prevention projects in Asia, setting up mobile eye treatment centres and improving the facilities of the schools for the blind on the Mainland. Billy Chan, Kelvin Ma, Michael Lee, Wyman Chau, Puiyee Tiu and Wendy Tang had a good start by finishing 140 laps in 30 minutes to clinch the championship. The spotlight later turned on Mr Wong as he led the police team, together with swimmers from the Mainland and Hong Kong, some being visually impaired and blind, broke the Guinness record set by 137 Australian swimmers in a relay for one hour. After completing the 138th lap, Mr Wong told OffBeat: "I've never expected to set a new Guinness record with people with disabilities. The event has given me an unforgettable experience. I hope the public will not overlook the needs of the disabled and provide more support so that they would fully integrate into society."
