Outgoing Deputy Commissioner (Management) Fung Siu-yuen hosted an informal reception on December 4 for major Force donors to thank them for their continued support for the Police Children's Education Trust and Police Education and Welfare Trust.

Present at the gathering were the chairmen and representatives from the Hong Kong Police Credit Union, Hong Kong Police Chinese Culture Club, Hong Kong Police Chinese Wushu Club, Junior Police Officers' Association, Police Dragon Boat Club, Hong Kong Police Inspectors' Association, Superintendents' Association and Overseas Inspectors' Association.

Mr Fung took the opportunity to present certificates of appreciation to the clubs and associations for their generous contributions to the two Trusts over the past years. He pointed out that their support not only enables the Trusts to carry on their missions, but also sets for other Force members a good example manifesting the camaraderie within the Force.

Mr Fung noted that during the eight months from April to November in 2007, the Trusts received donations amounting to $2.09 million, which surpassed the total donation of the 2006-07 financial year, with half of the donation made or raised by Force members. He encouraged other colleagues to follow suit to promote the idea of "charity starts from home" so as to benefit the next generation and nurture more talents for the community.

The two Education Trusts were established in 1967 with funds donated by the public and the Hong Kong Jockey Club respectively. The Trusts provide bursaries and grants for police children's education at mainly secondary and tertiary levels, and for those with different financial needs. Since 2000, scholarships have been awarded to police children who have excelled in their studies. Expenditures of these schemes are traditionally paid from the income from the two Trusts within the same year. With more police children receiving tertiary education and becoming eligible for financial assistance, plus the rises in compassionate and disabled grant disbursement due to inflation, the demand for assistance from the two Trusts has grown significantly over the years.

Since its inception in 1989, the Voluntary Contribution Scheme for the two Trusts has been providing a stable and reliable source of income for the Trusts. Officers joining the scheme can pledge an amount ($5 or its multiple) from their salaries as monthly contributions.
