The 11th Asian Shooting Championships held in Kuwait in early December, saw Edgar Yang, Acting Senior Superintendent (Auxiliary), achieve the ranking of 19 in the 25M standard pistol event with a score at 556, the first time an amateur shooter having come up with such an impressive result in Asia. Held every four years, the Asian Shooting Championships is a key event next to the World Shooting Championships in Asia.
"Among the 39 Asian countries, including Mainland, North Korea, Japan, South Korea, Kazakhstan, Thailand, Vietnam, Mongolia and India, fielded their professional shooters. I beat Japan for the last series of 10-second rapid firing and nabbed the ranking of 19. Wong Fai and Li Hao-jian, both formerly from the China National Squad, scored 566 and 555 respectively, making the Hong Kong team stay only 11 points behind the second runner-up Japan in this Standard Pistol event," said Edgar. "Amongst the top 20 shooters, I'm glad that my five-shot rapid firing in 10-second did so well that I was the 5th best shooters in this series. I shot 186 while the best from the Mainland shot 190. In this Standard Pistol event, the four series of 10-second rapid firing are always the key factor to determine how well a shooter may secure a better ranking," Edgar added. Edgar said that in the 31st South East Asia Shooting Championships held in Kula Lumpur, Malaysia, in August last year, he shot 555 in the Standard Pistol event, and that he was pleased with his better performance in the bigger scale Asian Shooting Championships. "I'm thankful for my performance to Mr Wong Fai, the coach of Hong Kong National Squad, who has technically helped me improve strength application across shoulder, wrist, gripping and finger trigger operation, which are so crucial to the result of 5-round rapid firing in the 20-second and 10-second series," he added. The Hong Kong team did very well in the Asian Shooting Championships. Amongst the 12 national squad pistol shooters, 10 made the minimum qualifying score (MQS) set by the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) in their major shooting disciplines, representing Hong Kong's best result ever in this event, said Edgar, who is Captain of the Hong Kong Olympic/ISSF shooting team.
