PTU 50th Anniversary celebrations commence |

Director of Operations Koo Sii-hong officiated at the Opening Ceremony launching celebrations to mark the historic 50th anniversary of the Police Tactical Unit (PTU) on February 22. Inaugurated in February 1958 as the Police Training Contingent or PTC, the PTU has been at the forefront of nearly all major incidents and events occurring in Hong Kong over the last 50 years. From its early days in Nissen huts on the same site, the camp as well as the Unit have seen many changes in its training, tactics and equipment. One aspect that has not changed is the 'Esprit de Corps' and strong sense of camaraderie that regularly sees PTU Company reunions being held many years after the Company has disbanded. It is the training and teamwork forged during the 12 weeks of arduous physical and tactical exercises that allow PTU platoons and Companies to respond to any situation. Mr Koo in his speech to assembled PTU HQs personnel, PTU Regional Company Commanders, Company 2 i/cs and guests alluded to this when he said: "PTU epitomises the label often given to the Force namely, 'the agency of both first and last resort'. Whenever harsh or onerous tasks have been required, PTU Officers have answered, responded and stepped up to the challenge every time." A series of events have been planned for the remainder of 2008 PTU's '50th year', to commemorate both the proud history as well as the importance of PTU to the Force and to the community. These include a series of exhibitions, a commemorative publication and the sale of special souvenirs. Ceremonies will culminate with a grand parade in November this year. At the opening ceremony, Mr Koo and Assistant Commissioner (Operations) Suen Kwai-leung unveiled two iconic reminders of PTU officers, past and present. The two figures not only represent the history of PTU but also reflect a proud 'today' and most important of all, a bright and optimistic future. Ordering of special souvenirs to mark PTU's 50th Anniversary will commence and the ordering form will be distributed soon.
