"An Integrated Approach to Physical Fitness and Health Management" (PHM) has been launched as a holistic approach to ensure that physical fitness and health are maintained among Force members in the long term. PHM places emphasis on the partnership among the management, Sports and Arts Clubs and all officers.

Under PHM, all officers are responsible for maintaining a standard of physical fitness commensurate with their duties. To help officers in this regard, the Sports and Arts Clubs will promote sporting and healthy lifestyle activities among them and their families. The role of the management is to provide resources, facilities, training and information on physical fitness and health management. In this regard, a number of measures have been implemented.

Since the launching of a "Visiting Coach Service" for all Fitness Training Rooms (FTRs) on January 2, two contract physical fitness coaches (one male and one female) have been visiting FTRs to provide training to FTR users on the use of FTR equipment, and personal coaching for individuals through a structured personalised programme as well as measurement of blood pressure and body mass index (BMI). One of the coaches visits each of the FTRs once every six weeks.

In addition, an FTR Inspection Scheme was launched on January 7 to provide regular maintenance services for fitness equipment at FTRs. A technician from the service contractor visits each FTR once every three months to provide basic maintenance services. In addition, continuous efforts are made to upgrade facilities in all FTRs, including provision of dumb-bells, skipping ropes and body composition analyser as well as replacement of all indoor bikes in phases. With the co-operation of LCSD, a more user-friendly way of booking of soccer pitches is now available for Force members.

A website on PHM will come into service on POINT to provide handy access to the knowledge on physical fitness and health management with hyperlinks to useful sites on physical activity, healthy diet, mental health, common diseases and symptoms, etc. Video clips on the use of fitness equipment will also be available on the PHM website. These videos will also be available in DVD format for distribution later. PHM information stands will be set up in all police stations later this year for display and distribution of information leaflets on different topics. The Force management has also budgeted additional funds to support PHM activities in all Formations.

To further promote the cause, a PHM Day will be held on April 27. Do not miss the next issue of OffBeat for more details.
