The Tram Safety Campaign Kick-off Ceremony, jointly organised by Traffic Hong Kong Island (T HKI), Hong Kong Road Safety Patrol (Hong Kong & Islands Region), and Hong Kong Tramways Ltd, and sponsored by Tong Seng Co., Ltd, took place at Hong Kong Tramways' Whitty Street Depot on June 28.

Speaking of the success of the Tram Safety Campaign since it was started in December 2003, T HKI Senior Superintendent Chiu Kai-ting pointed out that the number of traffic accidents involving trams dropped from 100 cases in 2004 to 67 cases in 2007. All those who were present at the ceremony were greatly encouraged by this big decrease.

The ceremony also saw a total of 24 elderly and school road safety patrol members being appointed as Tram Safety Ambassadors. The mission of these senior citizens and young people is to join forces to drive tram safety home to different walks of life.

Finally, the officiating guests and the Tram Safety Ambassadors joined a tram parade to hand out copies of a leaflet on tram safety to pedestrians, tram passengers and other road users at tram stops.
