Traffic HKI promotes safe police driving

The first half of 2008 saw a downward trend in police-on traffic accidents that occurred in Hong Kong Island (HKI) Region, as well as in the number of cases in which the police was found at fault, since a police driving safety seminar was held last November to promote safe driving among police officers attached to HKI Region.

In view of the favourable outcome of Traffic HKI's initiative, four workshops were held so far this month at the instruction of Senior Superintendent Chiu Kai-ting for more than 160 police drivers and non-cadre police officers from crime units, Emergency Unit and the four Districts of HKI Region.

As a large number of police drivers would take up special driving duty during the equestrian events in August, SSP Chiu encouraged the attendants to be more aware of road safety as well as occupational safety and health.

Senior Inspector Alan Yu, officer-in-charge of a Special Investigation Team outlined the findings of the latest research on "Police-on Traffic Accidents in HKI Region", while Station Sergeant So Kung-lai, Assistant Road Safety Officer, briefed the attendants on the recently-revised drink driving legislation and penalties. To enrich the contents of the workshops, Senior Inspector Lo Pui-wah, Regional Transport Officer (HKI & Marine), gave a presentation on safe driving skills.

SSP Chiu attributed the overwhelming success of the workshops to the encouraging support of the formations in HKI Region and the positive attitude of the attendants. He was confident that with the joint efforts within HKI, traffic accidents involving police drivers at fault would continue to drop.
