Tree planted in station

Two old large Royal Poinciana Flame trees were recently removed from the compound of the Mong Kok Police Station, following advice from the Leisure and Cultural Services Department that they had posed a potential hazard due to decay and damage by weather.

Members of the Mong Kok community were unhappy about the removal, as the trees, with their thick and leafy branches stretching over the pavement outside the compound and providing excellent sunshade for pedestrians, had formed part of the station and Mong Kok's heritage. Their greenery and red flowers had also soothed the eyes in the surrounding concrete jungle.

In view of this public sentiment, two local community leaders, Mr Yip Wah and Mr Chiu Yu-hei, have donated two White Champak (Bak Laan) trees for the benefit of local residents. With the assistance of the Architectural Services Department, one of the tree sites has become a small garden complete with a White Champak and other plants. To mark this occasion, Mong Kok District Commander Steve Carruthers, Deputy Commander Ng Ho-chun, Mr Yip and Mr Chiu officiated at a tree planting ceremony on August 1.
