Commissioner Tang King-shing and Yau Tsim District officers attended Iftar -- evening meal for breaking the daily fast during the Islamic month of Ramadan -- at the Kowloon Mosque in Tsim Sha Tsui on September 8. Other distinguished guests were the Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Tsang Tak-sing, the Consul-Generals in Hong Kong, including the United States of America, India, Iran, and Bangladesh, and representatives from various Muslim organisations. Yau Tsim District Commander Chung Hung-fung also took the opportunity of the Iftar to strengthen ties and friendship with their Muslim neighbours. The visiting party was warmly received by Mr Muhammad Arshad, Chief Imam of the Kowloon Mosque, Mr Hameed Jalal and Captain Shahzada Saleem, who briefed their guests on the architecture and history of the Kowloon Mosque as well as the lives and culture of Muslims. Over the years, Yau Tsim District has been working hard to strengthen communication with the Non-ethnic Chinese (NEC) Community and engaging them to support local policing. The District's initiatives in this aspect include recruiting NEC volunteers to assist in large-scale crowd management operations for festive functions, extending JPC membership to NEC youngsters as one of the pre-emptive measures to prevent juvenile delinquency, and organising Cantonese classes for NEC children to facilitate their integration into the local community. Yau Tsim District's forthcoming initiative will be another anti-drug seminar cum variety show for NEC parents and children on November 8, following the success of a similar event in September last year. NEC community leaders are supporting this initiative and have pledged to mobilise their communities to participate in the event and further promote anti-drug and crime-fighting messages among them.
