Police College to roll out |
||
In pursuance of the Strategic Action Plan on "Enhancing personal and professional qualities of Force members" and "Supporting frontline units", the Police College has developed a Chinese version of an e-learning package with a view to strengthening frontline junior supervisors' basic knowledge and skills of "Coaching". This package on "Coaching" will be uploaded to the Learning Portal of the Police College website on September 22. Force members are welcomed to access the package for self-study and reference. Nowadays, society's expectations of the Force keep rising. It is believed that most supervising officers will have a common concern of how to elevate the performance of their subordinates so as to attain the goals of "dedication to quality service and continuous improvement". In fact, "Coaching for Development" has already been included in the Force Training and Development Plan 2003/05. At the invitation of the Force, the Chinese University of Hong Kong has been conducting "Train-the Trainer" courses for Force members since 2004. So far, about 10 officers have been awarded with trainer's certificates. "Coaching" is in fact a kind of effective management skill through which the subordinates are encouraged to learn new professional knowledge so as to enhance their potentials at workplaces. Successful coaching not only can enhance the duty performances of individuals but also strengthen their confidence and sense of belonging. In return, it enhances the performance of the organisation as a whole. The e-learning package on "Coaching" comprises three parts, namely "Basic Concept", "Empathetic Listening and Response" and "Problem Solving". Games and scenarios, interactive questions and answers have been devised to bring out the relevant knowledge. It is envisaged that officers will be able to master the basic concept and skills of "Coaching" after completing the package in about 30 minutes. To boost the coaching skills of junior supervisors, the Police College will organise two sessions of a one-day "Coaching Workshop", to be run by the Force Training Officer and qualified instructors of the Police College, for those Station Sergeants and Sergeants who have successfully completed the package. The participants will receive more in-depth training on 'Coaching' theories and skills through case studies and practical exercises. Every officer who has successfully completed the package will be provided with a password. With this authenticated password, those Station Sergeants and Sergeants can apply to attend the "Coaching Workshop", which will be held at PSRC on November 10 or 14. As vacancies of the workshop are limited, officers are advised to complete the package and then enrol for the workshop on or before October 25. Meanwhile, the Police College is going to prepare an English version of the e-learning package for Inspectorate officers, expected to be available later this year.
