"We have certainly delivered one of the best Olympic and Paralympic Events," said Mr Tang in a thank you message.

The full text of the message reads: "I went to the Competition Venue last night to attend the Paralympic Equestrian Events for the last time. As on every occasion that I visited, I was moved by the commitment, professionalism and good cheer of all who had worked for days and nights over the past several weeks aiming at the common goal of staging the best Equestrian Events.

"You have not just achieved your task but have done it very well. I am thrilled that Hong Kong has come through with flying colours as the co-host city for the Beijing Olympic and Paralympic Games. We have certainly delivered one of the best Olympic and Paralympic Equestrian Events. It was your hard work and good spirit that made the events outstanding. You and all your colleagues who were involved have each played an important part in making the Beijing Games a truly exceptional Games. You have left Hong Kong with an Olympic and Paralympic legacy that we can all take pride in.

"I am very privileged to have been part of the Hong Kong team."

S for S' appreciation

Meanwhile, the Secretary for Security, Mr S K Lee, has expressed his "sincere appreciation" to Commissioner Tang King-shing and Force members for making the Olympic and Paralympic Equestrian Events "a resounding success".

In a letter to CP, Mr Lee said the Force had come up with an outstanding performance and extraordinarily dedicated efforts in policing the Events.

The rest of the letter reads: "By all measurable standards, the two Events exceeded all expectations and set a precedence of excellence for all to follow. Comments received from distinguished guests and visitors were most favourable and confirmed my thoughts pertaining to the professional and highly effective manner in which the two Games were organised and executed.

"I fully appreciate the long, hard hours of work and preparation to correlate the myriad of details necessary to ensure the success of these Events. This demonstration of exceptional skills and teamwork in co-ordinating all major tasks were nothing short of outstanding. Therefore, it is only befitting that we recognise those who performed their duties brilliantly over the past year or so. Grateful if you could pass on my appreciation to those who had made a contribution to the successful hosting of the Equestrian Events.

"Thank you all for a job well done above and beyond the call of duty."

Acting CP's reply

In a reply to the Secretary for Security, Acting Commissioner Yam Tat-wing said: "We were under no illusions that this would be a formidable challenge, considering the prolonged nature of the operation and the difficulties associated with hosting the Events in Hong Kong. I take great pride in the response of all members of the Force, both during the planning and execution phases. They were frequently required to work long hours in arduous conditions and the professionalism of all staff is a true testament to their commitment to serving the community of Hong Kong with pride and care."
