Shenzhen has undergone rapid economic developments in recent years. Results of one of Dr Hu's large-scale researches indicate that migrants and non-migrants in Shenzhen were both subject to various mental health problems. Suicide has also become a concern, with the suicide rates of women and in villages being significantly higher than those in Western countries.

Dr Hu gave the audience a comprehensive view of the work of mental health promotion and suicide prevention on the Mainland. He concluded his talk by quoting Socrates to show that mental health promotion and suicide prevention would not succeed without the participation of every member of the community.
