T HKI reaches out to morning walkers |
||
Between January and September this year, there were 147 traffic accidents in Hong Kong Island Region involving elderly people over the age of 60. Out of these accidents, six were fatal, drawing the attention of Traffic Hong Kong Island (T HKI). In a bid to make the elderly more aware of road safety, T HKI and Wan Chai, Central, Western and Eastern Districts have been carrying out on-street education at the morning exercise hotspots in HKI Region since last month. During this special drive, officers visited various morning exercise spots popular with the elderly to distribute publicity leaflets. The spots include the Hollywood Road Park, King George V Memorial Park, Victoria Park, Happy Valley Race Course, Aberdeen Praya Garden, Quarry Bay Park, and North Point Ferry Pier. The Hong Kong Road Safety Patrol and morning walkers supported the outreach visits. Mr Cecil Chan, Honorary Commissioner of the Patrol, over 30 friends of his "Morning Exercise" group, and members of the Hong Kong Road Safety Patrol (HK&I Region) assisted in a publicity drive carried out at the Yat Sen Steps in the University of Hong Kong. Hopefully, the joint efforts of the police and the Hong Kong Road Safety Patrol, plus co-operation of the elderly, would reduce the number of traffic accidents involving elderly people.
