The Force, a pillar of Hong Kong's prosperity and stability, had commanded the high respect and trust of members of the public, the Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Tsang Tak-sing, said when he inspected a passing-out parade at the Hong Kong Police College on January 10.

Looking back on 2008, Hong Kong rose to many unprecedented challenges including co-hosting of the Olympic and Paralympic Equestrian Events of the 2008 Beijing Games.

"With strategic planning and calm responsiveness at the commanding level and dynamism and dedication at the frontline, the Police Force pulled off a gold winning performance in maintaining law and order during the Olympics. They helped ensure a successful Games and also won the applause of both the local and the international communities," he said.

Mr Tsang expected that with the present severe economic environment, Hong Kong might be expecting some tough challenges ahead. But he was confident that with its perseverance and professionalism, the Force was well equipped to overcome any difficulties.

He also pointed out that the Force was pivotal in upholding the rule of law, which was the foundation of Hong Kong's success. He encouraged the graduating officers to do their utmost to protect the reputation of the Force and to maintain excellence so that the Force remained as the team that Hong Kong took pride in.

"Police work is special in nature. As you perform your crime-fighting duties, you will face many challenges, and no doubt a few temptations. Never forget what you have learned at the Police College, and serve the community with dignity, tenacity, impartiality and integrity for the honour of the Force," he told the parade.

Mr Tsang said that in a vibrant society, the scope and forms of law enforcement were forever evolving and developing. He encouraged the graduating officers to keep on learning from work and seize all opportunities for further training and education.

On parade were a total of 18 probationary inspectors and 201 recruit constables.
