I admit that financial management is something that has to be learned - in addition to books, we should also resort to our experience in life during the learning process. Given the diversity in backgrounds, financing approaches and perceptions on money among different people, you should have the best understanding of your own needs and situations, which allows you to make the best decision. I regard learning as a process in which theories and practice complement each other. Although I am the Associate Publisher of the Hong Kong Economic Times, this does not mean that I will have the same acquaintance with different kinds of markets and investment tools. Whenever I come across investment tools with which I am not familiar, I will first read some reference books before trading them. Then I will resort to books again to evaluate and study the results of my trading, no matter whether they turn out to be a profit or loss. My personal learning style is characterised by this kind of spiral process. In the long journey of learning, you will see that in addition to knowledge, you can also acquire some wisdom in dealing with other people, which will become part of your value system. When we talk about "wealth", we usually focus our discussion on issues related to money, but I think "knowledge" should have the same importance in the discussion. In a knowledge-based society, financing skills are of course very important, but with knowledge and good interpersonal relationship, you can face up to challenges in life and continue to secure a position in society for the pursuit of greater wealth. By Mr Shek Kang-chuen, Associate Publisher & Head of Research Department of the Hong Kong Economic Times. Extracted from "Wisdom on Financial Management" published by T.W.G. Hospitals Healthy Budgeting Debt Counselling Centre. Mr Shek will be the speaker of the next "Force Caring Seminar in Facing the Financial Tsunami" titled "Financial Management Formula under the Financial Tsunami" to be held between 4:30pm and 6pm on January 14 at the Auditorium of Police Headquarters. All police officers are welcome to bring along their relatives and friends to the seminar.
