In view of the significant impact of the financial tsunami on the community, Personnel Services and Staff Relations Branch is launching a series of seminars as part of the "Force Caring Series on Financial Tsunami" to help Force members ride out adversity.

The Psychological Services Group held the first seminar on December 13, in which two Clinical Psychologists from the United Centre of Emotional Health and Positive Living, Dr Anthony Tong and Ms Carol Yew, spoke about psychological self-healing in face of the global financial tsunami. In the two-hour seminar, they brought laughter and insights to the audience through interactive games, videos and personal sharing.

Ms Yew recapped the financial tsunami's sudden and wide impact on Hong Kong citizens in the past few months. She emphasised that in face of serious financial losses, it was natural to feel depressed, anxious, and angry. To cope with this, one could learn to accept the losses and to regulate one's emotions.

Ms Yew also cited examples to illustrate how thoughts could influence emotions, and offered tips on emotion regulation and stress management. She also suggested that in face of unpleasant events, one could try to perceive incidents from different perspectives and from a positive angle.

In his talk, Dr Tong introduced the concepts of Positive Psychology and encouraged the audience to remain optimistic so as to enhance resilience in face of adversity.
