In support of the Commissioner's Strategic Direction on "Supporting Frontline Units", New Territories South (NTS) Regional Headquarters recently organised workshops on "Coaching through Empathetic Listening and Response" and "Conflict Management and Interpersonal Communications" for frontline officers. The Coaching through Empathetic Listening and Response Workshop for junior inspectors, Non-commissioned Officers and tutor Police Constables of NTS was conducted by Woman Chief Inspector Shannon Chan, a qualified trainer of the Force, in two evenings in November last year. The content covered principles of coaching, mentoring and counselling, questioning skills, empathetic listening and response, as well as problem-solving methods. There were also experience-sharing sessions to discuss how these skills can be applied at the workplace. The one-day Workshop on Conflict Management & Interpersonal Communications for junior inspectors and NCOs of NTS, conducted by Dr Harry Hui and Dr Gracemary Leung, both from the University of Hong Kong, in December, was arranged with the assistance of Force Training Officer Cammie Leung of the Police College. The workshop guided the participants on how to handle conflicts by applying appropriate conflict management and interpersonal communication skills. Inspector Tony Ku Chun-nam from Tsuen Wan District, who attended both workshops, found the events useful for his job because, he said, officers had to handle disputes of different nature everyday. In addition, the workshops helped officers improve their communication skills and operational efficiency.
