At the invitation of the Certified Public Accountant, Australia (CPA Australia), Commercial Crime Bureau (CCB) Senior Inspector Mak Wing-yin gave a talk on the roles of accountants in fighting commercial crime, at a seminar on January 14.

CPA Australia is one of the largest accounting professional associations in the world with a current membership of over 117,000 scattered in the fields of finance, accounting, and business around the globe. SIP Mak's presentation attracted an audience of over 160 professional accountants.

A qualified accountant of the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountant, SIP Mak introduced the mission and structure of CCB, the latest commercial crime trend, and his investigation experience of various fraud cases. As the audience mainly comprised Chief Financial Officers, Auditors, Compliance Officers or Regulators, who somehow serve as "gatekeepers" against fraud in their respective fields, SIP Mak also disseminated commercial crime prevention messages, and quoted some convicted fraud cases to show how accountants could help prevent commercial crime by improving the internal control and corporate governance of their companies.

SIP Mak's presentation was well received by the audience, who, during a question-and-answer session, had a lively discussion on crime prevention measures with SIP Mak. On conclusion, SIP Mak stressed the importance of co-operation between the accounting profession and law enforcement agencies, and encouraged the audience to remain alert to suspicious transactions and to report to the relevant agencies for combatting commercial crime.
