Police College provides leadership training for AOs

On January 17 and 18, a group of 20 Administrative Officers (AOs) spent two days at the Police College receiving leadership training, after having served in the Government for two to three years.

The training is aimed at enhancing their self-awareness, as well as their leadership and teamwork abilities. The Police College has twice run this training programme for the Civil Service Bureau, and this year's programme, like the previous ones, has been very well received.

Extending a warm welcome to the programme participants, Dr Cheuk Chun-yin, Police College Director, encouraged them to derive maximum benefits from the training programme by actively participating in all activities and adopting an open mind during the learning process.

He said the key features of the programme would be:

* Guest lectures by Kowloon West Regional Commander Tang How-kong on leadership, and by Eastern District Commander Peter Morgan on negotiation.

* Experiential learning activities organised by the Exercise Unit and the Physical Training and First Aid Unit of the Foundation Training Centre, and

* Leadership Exercise run by the Management Learning Division of the Professional Development Learning Centre with the use of the self-developed Scenario-based Interactive Multi-player Simulation.

Some participants' views

Both Mr Eric Cheng, Assistant Secretary of the Education Bureau (EDB), and Mr Tony Yip, Assistant Secretary of the Food and Health Bureau, shared the view that the training programme was very well designed with a brief discussion on leadership theories and plenty of opportunities to put the theories into practice during various exercises.

Some other programme members also achieved personal breakthroughs. For example, a trainee, who is suffering from altophobia, was too scared to jump off a 10-metre-high pole during a Challenge Course at the beginning of the training programme. Later in the programme, she was able to overcome her fear of height by climbing over a two-metre-high wall with the support of her fellow team members during a team-building exercise.

Mr Gordon Chong, another Assistant Secretary from the EDB, was grateful to the course instructors for their care throughout the two-day residential programme.
