The Force strives to engage the community and build a harmonious society. At the same time, the Force also encourages officers to lead a healthy lifestyle. During the Chinese New Year, Kowloon West Region combined these two themes into one.

Between November 2008 and January this year, the Kowloon West Team for Promoting Arts and Cultural Activities, assisted by the Police Handicraft Club, organised a "Kowloon West LOVE and CARE Delivering Operation".

The prelude to the operation was a four-day "LOVE and CARE Knitting Class", where a member of the Handicraft Club and an elderly volunteer taught scarf-knitting in police stations in the Region during lunch-time. Over 70 officers and civilian staff members attended this training class and knitted a total of 85 LOVE and CARE scarves before the Chinese New Year.

The operation was officially launched on January 21 when Kowloon West Regional Commander Tang How-kong, accompanied by a party of officers, called at a centre for the elderly in Hung Hom, and extended Chinese New Year greetings to the 100 residents. During the visit, members of the Mong Kok Yin Ngai Societies Morning Tai Chi Class staged a drama reminding the elderly to remain alert to deception. This was followed by a question-and-answer session to reinforce the elderly's sense of crime prevention.

The residents had a pleasant surprise when officers handed out scarves, and Mr Tang introduced the purposes of the LOVE and CARE operation. The officers also distributed gift packs, by courtesy of members of the public supporting the operation.
