Cross Harbour Tunnel, Western Harbour Tunnel and Eastern Harbour Tunnel are major carriageways connecting Hong Kong Island and Kowloon. As tens of thousands of vehicles use these tunnels every day, road safety in the tunnels is naturally a prime concern for Traffic Hong Kong Island (T KHI). T HKI, therefore, maintains close partnership with the tunnel management in a bid to make the harbour tunnels safe for everybody.

Encouraged by the success of the "Road Safety Seminar for Tunnel Operators" jointly organised with the Transport Department last year, Senior Superintendent (T HKI) Wise Choy met the harbour tunnel management at Hong Kong Island Regional Headquarters earlier this month.

SSP Choy's guests were senior staff responsible for operations, engineering and traffic control inside the harbour tunnels. During the meeting, he had an in-depth discussion with the tunnel operators on significant traffic matters, including tunnel safety over the past years. More importantly, both parties agreed that their co-operation would be enhanced on the following aspects:

* Ways to raise the road safety awareness of tunnel users and operators;

* Use of low headlamps inside tunnels;

* Additional safety precaution for traffic arrangements during traffic diversion;

* Strict enforcement actions against traffic offences such as speeding, following too closely, and careless lane changing;

* Handling of traffic accident investigation, evidence collection and prosecution of offending drivers;

* Traffic management for large-scale public order events, and

* Ways to enhance collection and exchange of intelligence in respect of illegal road racing and vehicle procession, with a view to taking appropriate traffic arrangements.
