In support of the Force Working Group on Roadblocks, Police Tactical Unit Headquarters (PTU HQ) recently launched a three-month trial of new roadblock signage and lighting with a view to seeking functional improvements to the equipment that has been in use since 2003.

Following extensive research into the equipment available in the international market and currently in use in other police agencies around the world, PTU HQ has secured equipment for trial in 25 selected formations, including Regional Emergency Units, Regional Traffic Enforcement and Control teams as well as district and divisional units. A specially designed questionnaire accompanies the equipment to solicit feedback from frontline officers assisting in the trial project.

The equipment, which features a robust new design for lighting and signage, reveals enhancements in terms of reduction in weight, improved portability and storage on police vehicles, improved safety features, as well as easier mounting and dismantling on the road. Each of the new lighting elements weighs only 220 grams and with its specially designed "saucer" shape when placed on road can withstand loading of up to 24 tonnes. In a similar vein, each sign, weighing just seven kilogrammes, is light, readily foldable and easy to carry, but is sturdy and robust when erected, particularly suitable for windy conditions.

PTU HQ staff conducted a briefing and demonstration for formation representatives on February 26 to explain the specific features and deployment of the equipment.

The trial will conclude on May 30 this year.
