Following staging of the "Police Driving Safety Workshop" in Hong Kong Island Region in 2007, Traffic Hong Kong Island (T HKI) made a further effort throughout last year with a view to achieving a significant reduction in the traffic accidents involving police drivers.

The workshop was repeated last month to brief officers on the amended drink driving legislation and the newly introduced Random Breath Test. Over 170 Transport Cadre and non-Transport Cadre officers from Wan Chai District, Central District, Western District, Eastern District, Crime HKI, Operations HKI and Eastern Magistracy attended two sessions of the workshop at the Police Officers' Club.

Reviewing the traffic accident trend involving police officers in HKI Region last year, Senior Superintendent Wise Choy of T HKI reiterated the importance of driving safety and the advice: "If You Drink, Don't Drive". In anticipation of a big demand for police transport during the 2009 East Asian Games, he called on every officer to take note of the Occupation Safety and Health issues.

Another speaker at the workshop, Senior Inspector Yu Sum-lun of T HKI elaborated on and analysed the traffic accidents involving police officers last year by highlighting the causation factors and quoting cases of interest.

A third speaker, Senior Inspector Lo Pui-wah of RMTO HKI&MAR, briefed the audience on the do's and don'ts as well as the safety precautions for operational driving.

Officers from the Road Safety Team T HKI also updated the audience on the amended drink driving legislation and the increased penalties. The audience showed great interest in the operation procedures and guidelines for the random breath test device.

At the end of the workshop, Mr Choy said he was confident that officers would try their best to improve their driving skills, adding that he hoped the number of police officers involved in traffic accidents could be reduced to the minimum.
