Raising the elderly's awareness of road safety has always been a priority of Traffic Hong Kong Island's (T HKI) promotion efforts. Therefore, in support of the "Territory-wide Pedestrian Safety Campaign" initiated earlier by Traffic Branch Headquarters, T HKI and Hong Kong Road Safety Patrol (HK & I) jointly organised the "HKI Elderly Road Safety Talk Competition cum Vegetarian Lunch" last month.

Three teams coming from the "the Volunteers" and the Caritas Elderly Centre took part in the competition, disseminating road safety messages with a lively style by way of singing, dancing, staging a drama, and setting a role model for their peers.

Speaking as an officiating guest of the contest, T HKI Senior Superintendent Wise Choy said traffic accidents involving the elderly on Hong Kong Island recorded a significant drop last year compared with 2007. He thanked T HKI officers, District Traffic Teams and the Hong Kong Road Safety Patrol in launching a series of high-profile publicity activities in HKI region. "It is only when each and every one of us obeys traffic law that we can achieve the 'Zero Accident, Hong Kong's Goal'," he noted.

Dr Henry K M Liu of the Hong Kong Road Safety Patrol (HK & I) said he was impressed by the elderly's stage performances as well as their enthusiastic support for road safety promotion. He also complimented the Road Safety Team of T HKI for helping to bring down the number of traffic accidents involving the elderly on Hong Kong Island.

The competition concluded with a vegetarian lunch and road safety quiz, as well as a pledge by all participants to help achieve "Zero Accident, Hong Kong's Goal".
