In support of Commissioner's Strategic Action Plan for 2008-2010 on "Engaging the Community", Child Protection Policy Unit (CPPU), in conjunction with Caritas Medical Centre, Social Welfare Department, Hong Kong Family Welfare Society and Against Child Abuse, launched a publicity programme on health development for children, on Hoi Lai Estate and Sham Shui Po Government Primary School, on March 15.

The programme aimed at raising public awareness of parental and guardian responsibilities of ensuring children safety and educating children on strengthening their self-care and help-seeking abilities when being abused. The programme featured talks, games, exhibition booths and health check-up for about 400 families with children studying at kindergarten and Primary 1 and 2 on Hoi Lai Estate.

Prior to the launching ceremony, CPPU Woman Senior Inspector Lo Fung-yee led a 40-member party, comprising CPPU officers, police volunteers, non-governmental organisation volunteers and Sham Shui Po District Junior Police Call members, to hand out publicity leaflets there. In addition, posters were put up on the notice boards of 12 housing blocks, and leaflets were put into letter boxes on the estate and distributed to shops, restaurants and residents in the vicinity.

Officiating at the ceremony were Chairman of the Sham Shui Po District Council, Dr Chan Tung; Hospital Chief Executive of Caritas Medical Centre, Dr Ma Hok-cheung; District Social Welfare Officer, Sham Shui Po, Mrs Elaine Yue; Senior Manager (Family Service) of Hong Kong Family Welfare Society, Ms Yick Ching-yee; Senior Supervisor of Against Child Abuse, Dr Jessica Ho; Principal of YOT Pong Lo Shuk Yin Kindergarten, Ms Yip Yuk-tai, and Crime Wing Headquarters Superintendent (Crime Support), Ms Yu Yin-ching.

During the launching ceremony, WSIP Lo presented a talk entitled "Police Special Services for Vulnerable Witnesses". For the benefit of parents and children, CPPU also set up a booth resembling an interview suite for vulnerable witnesses, complete with some special equipment, a model of court setting, exhibition posters and video on child protection. The whole event went a long way towards beefing up the participants' knowledge of good health, child protection and availability of social services.

Besides looking after policy on child protection, CPPU also teams up with other stakeholders to promote parental responsibilities and well being of children
