Chief Inspector Ho Chun-chung and Senior Inspector Lam Yiu of Liaison Bureau (LB) recently attended the 8th Asian and the 4th Middle East and North Africa Interpol Contact Officers Meeting, held in Damascus, Syria, as members of the National Central Bureau, China delegation.

The five-day meeting, held from April 5 to 9, marked the first time the two regional meetings of Interpol had been jointly conducted. Attending the joint meeting were 62 delegates from 27 member countries from two regions - Asia and Middle East, and North Africa. The delegates agreed that the meeting provided a practical forum for enhancing international collaboration in fighting transnational and organised crimes.

At the meeting, CIP Ho delivered a presentation on the Force's strategy for fostering international police co-operation and on the work of Interpol Hong Kong, China. "Since joining Interpol in 1960, the Hong Kong Police have been playing an active role in Interpol's operations and businesses. The meeting provided an excellent opportunity for us to meet with our counterparts from Asia, Middle East and North Africa to share experiences, exchange good practices and discuss challenges, problems and solutions related to daily police co-operation," he said.

During the meeting, the delegates met with Major General Bassam Abdel Majeed, Minister of Interior of the Syrian Arab Republic, to discuss issues related to transnational crime and international police collaboration. The organisers also made arrangements for the delegates to visit the Golan Heights, giving CIP Ho and SIP Lam an opportunity to explore the history, political background, social and cultural issues of Syria and the Islamic countries in the Middle East.
