JPC members and groups commended

A total of 40 Junior Police Call (JPC) members and leaders, as well as 57 JPC school clubs and district councils were commended at a presentation ceremony on May 23 for organising and participating in community services, publicising fight crime messages and promoting the JPC Scheme.

The prize presentation ceremory marks a milestone of JPC's 35 years of development

During the Presentation Ceremony of the Hongkong Bank Foundation JPC Awards 2008, they received trophies and cash awards from Commissioner Tang King-shing, Deputy Commissioner (Operations) Yam Tat-wing, and Head of Corporate Sustainability Asia Pacific Region of the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited (HSBC), Ms Teresa Au.

Reaching milestone

Speaking at the ceremony, Police Public Relations Branch Chief Superintendent Ng Ka-sing pointed out that this year marked a milestone of JPC's 35 years of development.

He said the Joint University Programmes Admissions System (JUPAS) had given green light for granting additional credit points to JPC leaders or winners of JPC competitions for their outstanding leadership when they apply for admission to tertiary institutions. Training programmes and activities organised by JPC would also be included in the activity list of "Other Learning Experiences" under the "334" New Academic Structure.

He thanked different sectors of the community for their support for JPC, including HSBC sponsorship for the JPC Awards for the past 23 years, which had contributed to the continued development of the JPC Scheme.

Commending JPC members for their efforts and enthusiasm, Ms Teresa Au said: "The JPC mission is in line with HSBC's aims to actively support education projects in the community and encourage students to have a holistic development. HSBC is proud to have funded the award scheme since 1986. We hope to encourage the youth of Hong Kong to serve the community and develop their potential and leadership skills."

Organised by the Force with a total funding of over $5 million from the Hongkong Bank Foundation for the past 23 years, the JPC Awards Scheme comprises five categories: Best JPC Member, Best JPC Leader/Advanced Leader, Best JPC School Club (Primary School), Best JPC School Club (Secondary School) and Best JPC District Council.

A selection panel comprising representatives from the Force, HSBC and non-governmental organisations, has picked the winners from 494 nominated JPC members and 780 nominated groups.

Chan Chun-wing from Tsuen Wan was selected as the Best JPC Member while Alex Liang Chun-ho from Kowloon City as the Best JPC Advanced Leader. Each received a trophy and an $8,000 cash award.

The Holy Trinity College in Sham Shui Po and the Tong Mei Road Government Primary School in Mong Kok won the Best JPC School Club (Secondary School) and the Best JPC School Club (Primary School) awards respectively. The former received $13,000 and the latter $8,000 as cash awards. The Best JPC District Council award went to Sham Shui Po JPC District Council, which was honoured with a $21,000 cash award.
