To further optimise the Force's Integrated Counter Terrorism Strategy, a new Counter Terrorism Unit - Counter Terrorist Readiness Unit (CTRU) -will be established. The selection phase is underway, which will be followed by a 10-week training course coordinated by Counter Terrorism and Internal Security Division (CTIS), with significant inputs from SDU, EOD, PTU HQ and WTD.

This new unit has come under the immediate command and control of CTIS, Operations Wing, and has a broad remit encompassing the provision of operational, administrative and liaison functions, in line with the Force's CT Strategy, namely, Prevention, Protection, Preparedness, Pursuit and Recovery.

CTIS Superintendent Barry Smith said: "The challenge with the CTRU, once the officers have achieved a high level of basic training, will be to balance their operational deployments against their commitment to continuation training. The CTRU will not only provide CT tactical and professional support to specialist units, but also assist Regions in implementing the Force's CT Strategy. Given their broad spectrum of duties, it is vital they stay current and capable in all of the required skills and so regular training is seen as essential."

In the selection process, CTIS has decided to keep the qualifications for candidates as broad as possible in order to attract officers from varied backgrounds. Although largely an operational Unit, there are other skills deemed desirable including the abilities to engage the community and advise the private sector on protective security.

Recruitment for the CTRU was launched via POINT on May 29 where further details of application, selection and training can be found. For further enquiries please call either CIP Dave Jordan (2860-2193) or CIP Kong Man-keung (2860-2262).
