Operation Breakthrough, the youth charity run by volunteer police officers, has been accepted for the Social Welfare Department's "Partnership Fund for the Disadvantaged", a scheme that encourages Hong Kong businesses to support local charities by matching their donations on a dollar-for-dollar basis.

At a ceremony held recently at Police Sports and Recreation Club, Director of Management Services Mike Dowie, who is Executive Director of Breakthrough, received a cheque for $300,000 from Standard Chartered Bank's Chief Information Officer, Mr Craig Armstrong, and a matching cheque from Ms Ann Hon, Assistant Director of Social Welfare Department.

Mr Dowie thanked Standard Chartered Bank for their generous support for Breakthrough over the past three years, and expressed his hope that the partnership with the Social Welfare Department would be a long and successful one.

Operation Breakthrough uses sport as a medium to help youth at-risk. Participants from different sports were on hand to watch the ceremony, including those from boxing, soccer, rugby, lion dance, volleyball, modern dance, basketball, sailing, dragon boat, and the newest addition to the Breakthrough family - girls' kick-boxing. A barbeque followed for all participants.

Any officer or civilian staff interested in helping out as a volunteer in Breakthrough's activities may contact Mr Matt Lindsay on 2860-2542 or email sp-general-support for details.

Many youngsters are on hand to share the joy of further public recognition of Breakthrough's achievements.
