Senior Inspector Ma Kim-wai of the Yau Tsim District Anti-triad Squad represented the Force at the National Police Singing Contest jointly held by the Public Security Department of Jiangxi Province and the Jiangxi Satellite TV in Jinggangshan, Jiangxi, from June 23 to 25. With his consistently amazing performance, he was selected as one of the top ten police singers in China. On the invitation by the organisers, a selection committee consisting of members of Personnel Wing, Police Band and Hong Kong Police Choir picked SIP Ma for the contest from among 11 candidates in terms of singing skills, presentation style and Putonghua proficiency on June 11. SIP Ma has a strong passion for music and vocal art. Since becoming a member of the Singing Churchmen of Hong Kong in 1982, he has shown his talent in singing in various parts of the world. He has obtained the Royal School of Music Grade 8 Certificate of Vocal and Music Theory and is now working hard to prepare for the Diploma of Vocals under the guidance of Mr David Lui, a renowned tenor in Hong Kong. After arriving in Jinggangshan on June 21, SIP Ma, mixed well with the about 200 police singers from all over the Mainland, and made the most of his stay, preparing for the contest, studying how well his rivals had done in the past and making exchanges with other contestants. On the morning of June 24, with his singing skills, stage demeanour and presentation, he reached the final with a superb performance of the song, "Pearl of the Orient", touching the hearts of the guests, journalists and audience, all of whom joined him in his rendition. SIP Ma entered the final with another 20 hopefuls on the night of June 25. His resonant singing helped push the atmosphere to a climax as members of the judge panel, fellow contestants and the 1,000-plus audience sang the "Pearl of the Orient" along with him. Thanks to his accomplishment in singing and consistently amazing performance, he was awarded the honour of being one of the top 10 police singers in China. As it was the first time the Force had sent a participant to such a nation-wide singing contest, SIP Ma attracted a lot of local media attention. Subsequently he gave interviews to the China Police Daily, the Jiangxi TV and the Jiangxi Radio. His remarkable performance not only was well received by the media, but also won the high regard of the Public Security Department of Jiangxi, his competitors from other provinces and the general public on the Mainland. With his participation in the contest in Jinggangshan, SIP Ma has successfully projected a positive image for the Force.
