SBDIV to celebrate 30th Anniversary

In November Small Boat Division (SBD) will celebrate the 30th Anniversary of its formation.

Formed in 1979 under the leadership of the then Senior Superintendent Geoffrey Cox to provide Marine Region with a small fast craft capability, SBDIV was originally established as the Small Boat Unit (SBU). Manned only by volunteers, a tradition that has continued to the present day, the Unit was modelled along the lines of the "42 Commando" Royal Marines, who in the late 1970s operated in the Deep Bay area with Rigid Raiders to help stem the flow of illegal immigrants from the Mainland. Eventually SBU took over the work from the Royal Marines and its role and work rapidly grew over the years.

In the early 1990s, SBU and the Anti-smuggling Task Force (ASTF) worked closely together to tackle the Daai Feis, high-powered vessels used by smuggling syndicates to convey assorted contraband, including stolen vehicles, out of Hong Kong to the Mainland. In 1996 SBU and ASTF were amalgamated to form SBDIV, which today is widely respected by overseas law enforcement agencies and navies on account of its specialised skills, tactics and resources to perform its core role of high-speed pursuit and interception.

To celebrate the 30th Anniversary, two events will be held on November 7 this year.

Firstly, an Open Day will be held at SBDIV HQ at the Government Dockyard, and former and serving members of SBDIV, their families and other officers with a connection to SBU over the past 30 years will be invited to attend the function.

On the evening of the same day, a celebratory dinner will be held for former and serving officers. It is expected that all those attending the dinner will know the SBU Song, "Ching Chau Luk".

Details of the events, including how to register, are contained on the poster below.
