Force pulls off record-breaking victory | ||||||||||||||||||
Force athletes pulled off a record-breaking victory at the 2009 World Police and Fire Games (WPFG) held in Vancouver, Canada, from July 31 to August 9, capturing a total of 150 medals comprising 53 gold, 48 silver and 49 bronze. This is a vast improvement over the 109 medals the Force amassed at the same event in Adelaide, Australia in 2007. The Force sent the biggest delegation ever of 224 athletes to this biennial sports meet. Leading the delegation were Deputy Commissioner (Operations) Yam Tat-wing; New Territories North Regional Commander Cheung Siu-wah, and Police Public Relations Branch Chief Superintendent Ng Ka-sing. The 10-day athletic meet attracted more than 10,000 law enforcement officers from around the world, a record for WPFG. Having undergone vigorous training and preparation, Force athletes achieved outstanding results, and the Police Athletic Team, Shooting Team, Badminton Team and Swimming Team fully demonstrated their prowess. During their stay in Canada, Messrs Yam, Cheung and Ng attended a lunch reception hosted by the Hong Kong Police Old Comrades' Association (Canada). Chairman of the Association, Mr Ian Tyzzer, gave a warm welcome to the Force officials, touched on the latest developments in the Force, and reminisced about the work and life in the Force. The party, attracting the attendance of more than 60 retired police officers, was thoroughly enjoyed by all. The next World Police and Fire Games will be held in New York, USA, in 2011.
PAC shines in WPFG Twenty-six members of the Police Athletics Club (PAC), the largest PAC delegation in recent years, participated in 31 events in the WPFG, capturing, after seven days of competition, a total of 14 gold, 14 silver and 12 bronze medals. Woman Sergeant (WSGT) Wong Yin-yee and Acting Woman Chief Inspector (WCIP) Foo Yat-ting pulled off the most medals among the PAC delegates. WSGT Wong won five gold, two silver and four bronze medals in distance run, cross country and half-marathon whereas Acting WCIP Foo took two gold, two silver and one bronze in staircase race, in-door rowing and half-marathon. "This was my last time taking part in the WPFG before my retirement later this year. It was just like the medals were presented to celebrate my retirement. I enjoyed all the events I had taken part in and definitely this would be the most unforgettable moment in my life," said WSGT Wong. Interestingly, Acting WCIP Foo was taking part in the WPFG for the first time. "I spent more than a year in training for the Games. I am very proud of being a member of the delegation. I would like to thank all colleagues who gave me encouragement and unfailing support, especially all PAC Executive Committee (EC) members. WSGT Wong's unprecedented outstanding performance is an example to all of us. I wish we all could achieve the same result," she said. After returning from the WPFG, PAC EC members are now busy planning for forthcoming competitions for Force members. Race circulars will be issued on Force Noticeboard in due course. Retired members of the Force may contact Mr Tang Hon-chuen at Police Tactical Unit Headquarters on 2669-6214 for event entries.
