In response to the recommendations contained in a report of the Task Force on Youth Drug Abuse headed by the Secretary for Justice, the Force has formulated a number of measures to enhance anti-drug education and promotion, and to strengthen the Police School Liaison Programme.

The Narcotics Bureau (NB), therefore, held the first "Seminar on the Present Situation and Trend of Youth Drug Abuse" at Police Headquarters on August 27 for a total of 140 Police School Liaison Officers, Police Community Relations Officers, Anti-triad Unit School Teams as well as officers of Special Duty Squads in Regions and Districts. The seminar familiarised the officers with the problems of youth drug abuse so that they could get well prepared for the issue before the start of the new school year.

Presentations

Besides an analysis of the problem and trend of the abuse of psychotropic drugs, provided by NB officers, the audience also benefitted from the presentations on the same subject given by Dr Tse Man-li, Consultant and Deputy Director of the Hong Kong Poison Information Centre of the Hospital Authority, and Ms Lam Yeung-chu, Registered Social Worker and Manager of the Community Education Service of the Society of Rehabilitation and Crime Prevention. An Event Assistant of the Society also gave an account of her painful experience of abusing drugs in the past.

The audience was full of praise for the seminar, considering it fruitful, interesting and helpful.

NB Senior Superintendent Tsang Cheung-tat presented souvenirs to the three guest speakers in appreciation of their support for the seminar.

NB will hold the second seminar on October 16 for those officers who have missed the first one.
