In a bid to raise awareness of counter terrorism issues and preparations for the forthcoming East Asian Games, the Counter Terrorism and Internal Security Division of Operations Wing held two Counter Terrorism Awareness Briefing sessions for operators from different sectors of the community on September 2 and 8.

The seminars received an overwhelming response from over 300 participants from the industrial and commercial sectors, including those from Key Points, Critical Infrastructures, International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Port Facilities, aviation industry, rail industry, transport industry and hotel industry.

In a welcoming address, Senior Superintendent (Operations) Cheng Kwok-hung thanked the participants for their support for the Police in combatting terrorism, and hoped the seminars would enhance communication and co-operation.

The seminars covered presentations given by specialist unit officers. Key Point and Search Division Superintendent Lee Kiu-ki elaborated on the protection plan for Key Points, Critical Infrastructures and ISPS Port Facilities. Security Wing Superintendent Cheung Kin-kwong and Chief Inspector Ip Kan-chi provided an update on terrorist threat to Hong Kong, while Technology Crime Division Chief Inspector Wong Tak-cheung highlighted the importance of partnership for cyber security prior to and during the EAG. Bomb Disposal Officer Yuen Hon-wing focussed on the audience' awareness of bomb and CBRN agents.

Finally, Counter Terrorism and Internal Security Division Chief Inspector Ip Yu-pak outlined the rationale behind, and the roles of, the recently established Counter Terrorism Readiness Unit. The Q and A session drew lively discussion from the floor, further enhancing understanding between the Police and the audience.

The seminars were organised in support of the Strategic Direction Action Plan 2008-2010 in respect of "Engaging the Community" and the 2009 Commissioner's Operational Priority for promoting community awareness of combatting terrorist activities. Feedback on the seminars was so encouraging that Operations Wing will continue organising similar events for different stakeholders to further develop the public sector's integral roles in combatting terrorism with the Police.
