The "Tram Safety Campaign Kick-off Ceremony 2009", organised by Traffic Hong Kong Island (T HKI), Road Safety Patrol (Hong Kong & Islands) Region, and Hong Kong Tramways Ltd, was held successfully at Hong Kong Tramways' Whitty Street Depot on August 28.

Officiating at the ceremony were Mr Liu Kai-ming, Regional Commander (Hong Kong & Islands) of Road Safety Patrol, Mr Bruno Charade of Hong Kong Tramways Ltd, and T HKI Senior Superintendent Wise Choy.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Choy confirmed that the Tram Safety Campaign had been successful since being launched in 2003, adding that traffic accidents involving trams had dropped by 15 per cent from 100 in 2003 to 85 in 2008.

During the ceremony, 40 elderly and school road safety patrol members were appointed Tram Safety Ambassadors to deliver tram safety messages to all walks of life by setting examples of being a good tram passenger.

After the ceremony, the officiating guests led the Tram Safety Ambassadors to board two especially designed trams on a parade to distribute publicity leaflets to passengers, pedestrians and other road users.

The Tram Safety Campaign reduced accidents involving trams by 15 per cent between 2003 and 2008
