Sharing session on PI selection |
||
Encouraged by the overwhelming support for previous sharing sessions on Probationary Inspector (PI) Selection, Recruitment Division and "Knowledge Cafe" jointly organised another sharing session at Police Officers' Club on September 8. The event attracted some 80 Junior Police Officers striving for advancement to the PI rank, who benefitted from an interactive discussion on the selection criteria for PI via the channels of Direct Application (DA) and the Potential Officers Scheme (POS). Foundation Training Centre Senior Superintendent Oscar Kwok was the main speaker while Superintendent Eric Cheng, Force Champion of the Knowledge Management Peer Advisors Scheme (PAS), acted as a facilitator. As Chairman of the PI Final Interview Board, SSP Kwok reminded the participants of the following qualities they should focus on for their personal development:
Communication Skills - Verbal and writing skills in the official languages.- For verbal communication, candidates should be able to adequately express themselves and understand the questions put to them.
Critical Thinking Ability - Candidates should cultivate a habit of questioning facts or opinions.- Instead of taking things at their "face values", candidates should develop a habit of verifying the authenticity and logic of the facts presented, before adopting their own stances.
Logical Thinking - Logical thinking is a basis for solving problems and also a way of thinking in terms of "cause and effect", followed by consideration of options at each logical step when considering a problem and its solution.
Understanding of Leadership - Any leader will act in line with his or her perceived "leadership", both in a theoretical sense and a practical police context.Regarding preparation for attending an interview, SSP Kwok stressed that it was essential for candidates to develop self-awareness and establish their positions on issues through: * knowing one's work (an insight into the working environment); * knowing the Force (current and future priorities and significant challenges), and * knowing society (macroscopic issues). Another guest speaker, Senior Superintendent Human Resources Chiu Kai-ting, discussed with the participants the revised POS and the ways forward for development of POS and DA. At the end of the sharing session, the participants had a direct dialogue with SSP Kwok, whose inspiring and helpful advice, they said, would be a valuable reference for their efforts to advance to the PI rank. A compact disc on the sharing session is now available in the Force Library. In view of the strong interest in PI selection, Recruitment Division will organise more similar sessions. Interested officers are advised to watch out for more details on the Force NoticeBoard.
