"The Force, being a law enforcement agency dedicated to maintaining security and stability in Hong Kong, must endeavour to do its best with the highest standard of integrity, self-restraint, fairness, impartiality and professionalism. It must also maintain and enhance public trust and support," Deputy Commissioner (Operations) Yam Tat-wing told officers of the "F" Company of the Police Tactical Unit (PTU) on January 8.

Speaking as a Reviewing Officer at the passing-out parade at PTU Headquarters, Mr Yam noted that Hong Kong, as a metropolis, had served as the venue for many international conferences and major functions, for example the World Trade Organisation's Hong Kong Ministerial Conference in 2005, the Olympic and Paralympic Equestrian Events in 2008 and the East Asian Games in 2009.

He said: "Everybody will have opportunities to take part in similar events, forever remain at the forefront and shoulder the responsibilities of carrying out major operations related to security and crowd management to ensure their successful conclusion."

Mr Yam is very pleased that the PTU keeps abreast of times, keeps on updating itself, and improves and enhances various types of training. At the same time, PTU trainees show esprit de corps and totally commit themselves to completing various arduous training, living up to PTU's spirit of unity, perpetuating the Blue Berets' fine tradition in the past 50 years, and getting well prepared for meeting challenges in their Regions.

He was also very impressed with the officers' smart turnout and high spirits, when they marched past the Reviewing Stand.

"Your impressive posture reminds me of the different experiences and challenges I faced as a Platoon Commander, Company 2nd In-charge, Company Commander and PTU Commandant. In my 37-year service in the Force, I have garnered many unforgettable memories. I have profound and special feelings for the PTU, and inspecting this elite team again before my retirement in March has a special meaning to me," he added.

Mr Yam told the officers: "Today's passing-out parade is merely the conclusion of your training. The real test has just begun. I am confident you would not let down society, your families and PTU teaching staff in respect of their expectations. I am sure you will do your best and work closely together to serve the community and continue to maintain Hong Kong as one of the safest and most stable cities in the world."

Finally, Mr Yam wished all the guests at the passing-out parade and "F" Company officers good health and success in their careers.
