Assistant Commissioner (ACP) (Crime) To Chun-wai launched on February 11 the official website for the 1st INTERPOL Information Security Conference in his capacity as the Chairman of the Conference Organising Committee. The conference will take place between September 15 and 17 at Police Headquarters, and will operate under the thematic approach of "Global Co-operation Today for InfoSec Risks Tomorrow".
The conference will be held at the Auditorium and Multi-Purpose Hall at Police Headquarters, and is expected to be a landmark event, setting out international strategies in terms of the prevention and detection of "cyber-crime" in the 21st century. Detailed and meticulous preparation has been underway since November last year, with the establishment of a designated full-time Conference Secretariat under the Liaison Bureau, headed by Superintendent (SP) Tam Siu-on, assisted by two Inspectors and two Junior Police Officers. The Secretariat has worked alongside seven Organisational Sub-Committees, each headed by a Superintendent, individually responsible for Conference Programme, Venue and Facilities, Registration and Management, Transport and Accommodation, Social Events, Publicity and Exhibitions.
Visit of INTERPOL Director In July last year and February this year, the INTERPOL Director of Information Systems and Technology Directorate, Mr Noboru Nakatani, visited the Force, and met with the Conference Secretariat and the Organisational Sub-Committees.Mr Nakatani expressed delight that Hong Kong had been chosen to host the conference, and complimented the Force for its high level of preparedness for the event. "The Hong Kong Police Headquarters is the perfect venue for such a conference, and I am impressed by the amount of planning that has already been done. I am sure conference delegates will be as impressed as I at the professionalism displayed by the Hong Kong Police," said Mr Nakatani.
Relevant and topical opportunity The working title of "Global Co-operation Today for InfoSec Risks Tomorrow" emphasises the determination of the Force and INTERPOL to address the serious implications and responsibilities of law enforcement bodies in the rapidly developing area of information security. The conference will be a relevant and topical opportunity to enhance international co-operation, and will be a showcase event, upon which future international strategy will be developed.SP Tam thanked the part-time volunteers of the respective organising sub-committees for their "commendable teamwork and significant contribution in ensuring that the conference would reflect favourably not only on the Force, but also Hong Kong as a hub in global information security efforts." SP Tam continued: "thank all involved for their consistent support and hard work covering all aspects of the elaborate organisation; their vision and drive will not only further promote Hong Kong as a centre of excellence in terms of policing of information security, but also enhance and reinforce co-operation with our international partners."
Purpose of website The launch of the website (www.iisc2010.org) is primarily intended to publicise the conference, and offer an opportunity for any concerned party to get updated on the efforts being made to both safeguard information in the first instance, and to effectively combat illegal access to and use of personal information. Moreover, the website will highlight and reflect the professionalism and hard work of all officers of the Force, in a serious and rapidly evolving area. Finally, the website will provide an opportunity to further promote Hong Kong as a modern, vibrant and diverse city, at a global level. The website, established with the coordination and support from Police Public Relations Branch and Information Technology Branch, will continuously be topped up and updated as and when new information surfaces.
