In the wake of the recent promulgation of Kowloon East's (KE) Regional Action Plan for 2010, KE officers will step up their efforts to forge closer ties with all sectors of the community in a bid to enlist their support for police work.

In line with this strategic direction spelt out in the plan, KE Regional Commander Suen Kwai-leung hosted two luncheon gatherings this month, one with the MTR Corporation (MTRC) and the Hong Kong Road Safety Patrol (Kowloon East Region), and the other with all the secondary school principals in KE Region, with a view to building closer links with them for delivering better police services to the community.

Among the 50 guests attending the first lunch were MTRC Chief of Operations, Mr Cheung Siu-wah, and Senior Assistant Commissioner of KE Road Safety Patrol, Mr Wong Kit-lung. At the gathering, Mr Suen reviewed the Force's efforts to promote road safety over the past year and stressed that enhancing road safety through law enforcement and education is one of his operational priorities.

On policing of the railway system, Mr Suen expressed his appreciation of MTRC's co-operation with the Force in preventing and fighting crime. "To achieve a safe railway environment with a low crime rate, the efforts and support of MTRC are indispensable, particularly in training of its frontline staff and dissemination of anti-crime messages," he noted.

For two other Regional Operation Priorities, i.e. "identifying and interdicting the criminal activities of youth gangs" and "preventing abuse of psychotropic drugs by students, juveniles and young persons", KE Region teamed up with the Police Community Relations Offices in Wong Tai Sin, Kwun Tong and Sau Mau Ping Districts to host the second lunch for the chairmen of all the school associations and around 100 secondary school principals in the Region.

At the gathering, Mr Suen reviewed his officers' efforts in the past year to help schools prevent students from going astray and combat drug abuse under a partnership scheme of the Police School Liaison Programme. Looking ahead, he stressed that the officers would continue to join hands with schools to make youngsters more aware of the importance of staying away from crime.

The two luncheon gatherings also provided an opportunity for the guests to communicate directly with frontline commanders, and to identify the challenges ahead and police strategies for handling various matters. All the guests pledged to continue to work closely with the police in disseminating anti-crime messages with a multi-agency partnership approach.
