The Police Mentorship Programme (PMP) for 2010-11 commenced on April 24, entering the seventh year of operation for full-time non-final year undergraduates of 10 local tertiary institutes.

Officiating at the PMP Inauguration Ceremony were Assistant Commissioner (Personnel) Chau Kwok-leung; Head Mentor, Chief Superintendent Chung Hung-fung; Deputy Head Mentor, Chief Superintendent Ng Tsui Fung-ying; and guests from the 10 institutes.

PMP was launched in 2004 with the participation of eight tertiary institutes, namely the City University, Baptist University, Lingnan University, Chinese University, Polytechnic University, University of Science and Technology, University of Hong Kong
, and Institute of Education. In 2009, the programme was extended to cover Shue Yan University and Open University of Hong Kong, bringing the number of participating institutes to 10.

This year, 133 undergraduates have been selected as Mentees, to be guided by 42 Mentors and 10 Assistant Mentors. Mentors are experienced police officers while Assistant Mentors are former Mentees. This combination will help enhance the communication between Mentors and Mentees.

PMP over the years has brought Mentors and undergraduates from their Alma Maters together for interaction and sharing. PMP also offers Mentees opportunities to visit police stations, and take part in a job attachment programme and a summer camp. The Mentees will not only learn police work, but also have a feel of the sweets and bitters of being a police officer. These experiences may inspire them to pursue a career with the Force after graduation. So far, 56 Mentees have joined the Force.

Addressing the Inauguration Ceremony, Mr Chau credited the participating institutes and Mentors with the success of PMP. He urged Mentors and Mentees to play active roles, and share experiences in education, careers and life.

Mr Chau also quoted a phrase from the Chinese classical, "Yi Jing", to encourage all PMP participants to pursue self-enhancement, set life goals, and strive for excellence.

Mr Chau presented souvenirs to the  guests as a token of his appreciation of their support for PMP, as well as certificates of appointment and letters of appreciation to the Mentors and Assistant Mentors.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Assistant Commissioner (Personnel) Chau Kwok-leung calls on both Mentors and Mentees to play active roles in the Police Mentorship Programme
