Representatives of the Management Committee - Card Authorisation System in PRC called at Commercial Crime Bureau (CCB) on June 4 and presented complimentary plaques to CCB officers for making painstaking investigations and neutralising a credit card fraud syndicate. The representatives also expressed their appreciation that the officers' efforts had resulted in a significant drop in cases of "Account-take-over" fraud in Hong Kong.

Since November last year, fraudsters of a highly sophisticated syndicate had committed a series of "Account-take-over" fraud by making fraudulent applications for credit cards to some local banks with unlawfully obtained bank customers' personal data and financial information. Upon obtaining the payment cards, they withdrew a huge sum of cash and purchased luxurious items mainly in the Mainland and Macau until the credit limits were used up. The loss suffered by the cardholders amounted to $8 million. CCB officers arrested seven fraudsters between January and March this year and seized a large quantity of exhibits.

After receiving the complimentary plaques from 26 representatives of the banking industry, CCB officers shared with the guests their experience of tackling and preventing credit card related crimes.
