       Elderly Road Safety Drive moves to Yuen Long |
      ||
Traffic Branch Headquarters (TBHQ) continues to engage the community in promoting road safety by working closely with the Road Safety Council (RSC) and District Councils. As elderly pedestrians have accounted for 60 percent of all pedestrian fatalities, TBHQ and RSC have been running a special programme to bring road safety messages to elderly pedestrians across the territory. After the programme was successfully held in Sham Shui Po, Western District and Kwun Tong in the past, TBHQ, RSC, Yuen Long District Council and Hong Kong Road Safety Patrol (HKRSP) kicked-off the 2010 publicity campaign on June 18 in Yuen Long. With the help of elderly volunteers, the slogan of "Love Yourself, Love Your Family, Be a Smart Pedestrian" was hammered home to remind the public, especially senior citizens, to use road-crossing facilities and follow traffic rules. Officiating at the event were Road Safety Campaign Committee Chairman, Mr Lawrence Yu Kam-kee; Yuen Long District Council Chairman, Mr Leung Che-cheung; HKRSP (New Territories North Region) Senior Assistant Commissioner, Mr Paul Lau; and TBHQ Chief Superintendent Stephen Verralls. It was a fun-packed and educational event featuring lion dance, road safety quiz, singing performance by artiste Lam Chi-mei and foot-drill by local elderly, all highlighting the importance of complying with traffic rules, and providing tips on road safety in a light-hearted atmosphere. After the launching ceremony, all guests and "Elderly Road Safety Ambassadors" boarded the "Elderly Road Safety Bus" to busy pedestrian spots to hand out publicity leaflets and souvenirs to the elderly, greeted by enthusiastic crowds. The ceremony also marked the prelude to a territory-wide pedestrian road safety campaign, which started on June 18, and finished on July 1. In the first week of the campaign, educational leaflets were distributed to pedestrians at busy spots throughout the territory, while stringent enforcement actions were taken in the second week.
