At the invitation of the New South Wales Police College, Police Driving and Traffic Training Division (PD&TTD) Superintendent (SP) Stephen So, accompanied by PD&TTD Senior Inspector (SIP) Edmund Chiu, recently paid a two-day visit to the New South Wales (NSW) Police Driving School at Goulburn, New South Wales, Australia. Following their duty visit, the pair also participated in a three-day Solo Cycle forum, organised by the NSW Police Driving School. Also attending the event were 24 representatives from various jurisdictions, including Australia, New Zealand and United States. During the forum, all representatives shared their good practices in motorcycle training and exchanged knowledge of the modern technology that can make police motorcycle training and operations safer and reduce the likelihood of injuries in day-to-day operations. As regard modern technology, most police driving training institutes, including the PD&TTD of the Police College, are exploring the feasibility of installing driving simulators at their training bases in order to provide an additional training aid for enhancing trainees' driving skills. The forum also broadened the representatives' horizons and understanding of the police motorcycle training conducted by various jurisdictions. "In Australia, all police motorcycle trainees must hold a valid civilian motorcycle licence but in Hong Kong, PD&TTD also trains novice police motorcyclists. Like the Force, all Australian Police Forces have put in place strict safe driving policies," said SIP Chiu. For experience sharing amongst all participating police jurisdictions, SP So proposed to the forum to set up an electronic knowledge and experience-sharing platform, on which good practices and lessons learned, in terms of motorcycle training, modern technology, occupational safety and health, will be captured and shared. All representatives unanimously supported this idea, and follow-up action is underway. "We are very pleased to have such a strong support from our overseas counterparts," said SP So.
