Thousands of police children have achieved their academic potentials with the scholarships offered by the Police Children's Education Trust and Police Education and Welfare Trust, said Commissioner Tang King-shing at the 2008/09 and 2009/10 Scholarship Award Ceremony on August 3.

Congratulating the 157 scholarship winners, he called on them to make good use of their scholarships to achieve better performance in the coming year.

Mr Tang attributed the smooth operation of the two education trusts to the "selfless contribution and liberal donation" of people from various sectors of the community. He told a large gathering of guests: "I am very grateful to all donors. Your great support is the motivation that keeps the trusts operating for years. I am also thankful for your recognition and commitment towards the education of our next generation, as well as your support to the Force.

"In addition, I have to mention that a number of the donors are members of the Force. Your generous contributions further manifest the commitment of the Force to promoting a caring culture and team spirit in terms of action."

Later, Mr Tang presented Scholarship for Outstanding Academic Performance (for university entry), while Mr Victor Li, Chairman of Joint Management Committees, and Mr Ernest Tsang, who was representing the Chairman of the Joint Investment Advisory Boards, presented Scholarship for Outstanding Academic Performance (for secondary six entry).

The guest presenting the Providence Foundation Medical Scholarship for Year One Medical Student was a past beneficiary of the education trusts, Dr Mak Ying-fai, Associate Consultant of Department of Medicine, Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

In a short interview with OffBeat, Dr Mak said police scholarship had helped him not only complete his medical studies, but also take care of many patients. Being a specialist in geriatric medicine, he said doctors have to look after both the health and spiritual needs of a patient. "This is a job that is meaningful and offers job satisfaction," he noted.

Dr Mak offers this advice to the scholarship winners: "Grasp at every opportunity that comes up during your studies, have good time management and actively take part in extra-curricular activities. At the same time, take police officers as a role model to help other people and build up good characters."

Last year's Form Six scholarship winner, Ma Cheuk-kwan, is grateful for the Force's financial assistance. She will attend university in England after her summer vacation.

Mr Tang has called on scholarship winners to work hard in their studies
