Internship of a different kind |

Many students have put down their schoolbags and are enjoying the summer vacation as much as they can. But for seven undergraduates - Chan Fan-ho, Wong Au-ting, Yu Ka-ming, Lam Ka-keung, Hui Yeuk-fan, Cheung Lam-yan and Lam Ka-man - this summer has been rather special and fulfilling. Through the "Police Mentorship Programme" and the "Summer Internship Programme", they have been picked from over 500 candidates from local and overseas universities to learn the ropes in the Liaison Bureau (LB). Four of the summer interns conducted researches on Mainland policing and assisted in compiling the participating thesis for the Symposium on Police Studies for the Strait cum Hong Kong and Macau. Besides putting their logic thinking and analytical skills to good use, they learned more about police work from a macro view. Furthermore, they had opportunities to meet and exchange ideas with law enforcement officers in the Mainland and Macau. Working for the Conference Secretariat of the 1st INTERPOL Information Security Conference, the other three interns assisted in preparation work for the conference, which is scheduled to take place at Police Headquarters from September 15 to 17. Helping out with venue decoration, logistics and publicity, they eagerly anticipated the arrival of as many as 250 representatives from around the world. They were confident that this major international conference will be a great success. According to LB Inspector Cheng Chun-kit, LB, besides engaging university students through the "Police Mentorship Programme" and the "Summer Internship Programme", also hopes that the participation would help it realise the goal of enhancing Mainland integration and global co-operation. During their internship, the interns regarded LB officers both as mentors and friends. They found their assignments very challenging, having brought them precious experiences and boosted their competitiveness. Some have indicated interest in joining the Force after their graduation. Inspector Cheng has thanked the interns for their contributions and wished them a bright future. He stressed that LB will continue to take part in the "Police Mentorship Programme" and the "Summer Internship Programme" to push community participation and to enable more young people to get a better understanding of police work.
