In a bid to preserve the Force's heritage, the Kowloon West Regional Police Headquarters Officers' Mess Committee will produce a limited number of 250 replicas of the clay-sculptured vase, which has been on display at the renovated lobby of the Kowloon West Regional Police Headquarters since January 2008. The vase was originally one of the six identical decorative vases on the roof of a building constructed in 1925 at the junction of Prince Edward Road and Nathan Road, Mong Kok. The design of the vase, adorned with carved roses set at the top, was a popular Western-style roof decoration at the time. The building began housing the Kowloon Police Headquarters in 1947 after the Second World War. In December 1975, upon completion of the building now housing the Kowloon West Regional Police Headquarters, the Kowloon Police Headquarters moved in when the old building in Mong Kok was demolished to make way for the Prince Edward MTR Station. The clay-sculptured vase was then protected with coats of white paint and kept at the lobby of the Kowloon Police Headquarters to mark the headquarters' relocation. As time elapsed, the vase showed signs of wear and tear. During renovation of the Kowloon West Regional Police Headquarters in late 2007, and with the support of the former Regional Commander Lo Yik-kee, the clay sculpture was restored by a Restoration and Monument Consultant and was put on display at the renovated lobby in January 2008. In the views of the Mess Committee, the clay sculpture is emblematic of the history of the Kowloon West Police Regional Headquarters, having witnessed all the changes and challenges it has gone through, as well as the developments and progress it has made. The vase replica will be presented to departing Mess members as a souvenir. It is eight inches tall with a unique product code, accompanied by an introductory leaflet and a CD on the restoration process of the vase. As many Force members are interested in owning this special collectible, the Mess Committee has decided to reserve a small number of replicas for sale to serving and former officers of Kowloon West Region at the price of $200. Those interested may contact Inspector Amour Kwong on 2761-2427 or through ip-sip-ops-sup-kw@police.gov.hk for sale arrangement.
