Covering an area of 102 square kilometres, Tai Po District has about 140 villages with big or small populations. In view of this large number, Tai Po District (TPDIST) is extending its "Project Eyes and Eyes" to the villages to prevent and fight crimes. In mid July, TPDIST Commander So Kam-tong, accompanied by officers of the New Territories North Regional Crime Prevention Office, called at the Tai Po Rural Committee and introduced the objectives, concept and implementation of "Project Eyes and Ears". At the same time, Intelligence Section and Task Force Sub-unit officers also updated village representatives on the latest crime situation and modus operandi, while crime prevention officers advised the representatives to install more closed-circuit television systems in their villages. Response to the advice from the village representatives was favourable. Head of Wong Yi Au Village, Mr Chan Siu-kuen, disclosed that there was a big drop in burglary cases after installation of a closed-circuit television system. Head of Ting Kok Village, Mr Chan Hon-ming, agreed that the system is a big help for the police. In view of these comments, Rural Committee Chairman, Mr Man Chun-fai, encouraged other villages to follow suit. During a discussion, Mr So stressed that "Project Eyes and Ears" would boost contacts between his officers and the public, while the village representatives welcomed the project being extended to their villages.
